Oh look it’s snowing in Wisconsin. In July. That’s peculia… HOLY FUCKING FUCK THAT ISN’T SNOW THOSE ARE SWARMS ARE CREEPY CRAWLY BUGS!!!
The annual mayfly hatch along the Mississippi River is happening now and this year’s crop was mind-boggling enormous. So many bugs in fact that swarms showed up on radar in the western Wisconsin area like it was some low pressure system bringing a thunderstorm. According to the National Weather Service, parts of the swarm flew as high as 2,500 feet above the ground in the La Crosse, Wisconsin.
There was such a Biblical infestation that it caused a three-vehicle crash which injured two people.
The gross nuisance won’t last very long because adult mayflies have a lifespan ranging from a few days to a few hours. The birth of these bugs isn’t very romantic; the eggs are basically pooped out and they hatch shortly thereafter, like in minutes thereafter. Thank my lucky stars that I don’t live in Wisconsin.
