In 1976 the band, “Feedback” was formed by a Dublin high school student posting a note on the school’s notice board in search of musicians for a new band. That band included Larry Mullen Jr. on drums, Paul Hewson was the lead singer; David Evans and his older brother Dik Evans on guitar, and Adam Clayton, a friend of the Evans brothers on bass guitar. In 1976 the band changed their name to “The Hype.” The band wanted to condense to a four-man group and during their farewell show in 1978 in the Presbyterian Church Hall in Howth, Dik ceremonially walked off stage. The band finished their show and changed their name to “U2.” This new Irish band was influenced by the rebellion attitude of punk rock groups like The Clash, The Buzzcocks, and The Sex Pistols and attempted to make a name for themselves. They toured the usual circuit of hole-in-the-wall pubs and basically anywhere they could get a gig. Bars often called the band by the wrong names, “U Two,” “U2′s,” and “The U2.” However these establishments are quick to remember their name now that U2 is the biggest rock and roll band on the planet. Let’s take a photographic journey back to early days of U2.
